Creating and maintaining building-specific fire safety documentation is a mandatory legal requirement.
For certain buildings and circumstances, applicable fire safety documentation must be submitted to the relevant authority or regulator. Documentation should outline how fire safety has been considered in the design, build, operation and maintenance of a building and demonstrate that the chosen approach(es) are contextually suitable; hence in compliance with applicable legislation, such as the Building Regulations 2010 and the Building Safety Act 2022.
Typically, specific and detailed information on the fire safety measures incorporated into a building must also be provided; with the level of detail being dependant on building-specific characteristics.
For buildings already in use, ongoing obligations apply under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 as well as the Building Safety Act 2022; taking into account recent amendments and sub-legislation introductions.

Fire Safety Engineering input is normally needed when:
- New building construction, existing building alterations or changes of use are proposed.
- An assessment of a buildings external wall fire risk (to life) is needed to inform the buildings fire risk assessment.
- Compiling a buildings safety case report (for a Building Assessment Certificate (BAC)) or a buildings golden thread.
- Responsible Persons or Authorised Persons require support in meeting their various obligations including creating, reviewing or updating mandatory fire safety documentation.
